We
had 4 boards on the Saturday morning and afternoon rounds, and 3
boards on Sunday. The numbers were pretty close to multiples of
seven which makes a TD's life much easier. I had Amanda there to
make up boards of seven as needed and for the Saturday morning round
including myself and Amanda we had exactly 28. The Saturday
afternoon round required two people to play two boards at once. Andy
Bartelone and Chris Martin both volunteered. Chris grumbled a bit on
my board as England he was attacked by FG and I did nothing to stop
it (R) in fact I might have taken Norway from him in Fall1902. As he
was playing two boards at once I guess I could have cut him more
slack but while he was struggling to keep his France afloat on the
other board he did end up topping it in the end albeit with only 7
centers. It's a testament to Chris that he can pull a game like that
out of the box under the most adverse circumstances. It's no wonder
he went on to win the Boston Massacre outright.

So thanks to all those came, and commiserations to those of you that
couldn't make it. We all had a great time, and maybe next year we'll
have an even bigger tournament.

And finally thank you to Amanda, Evan and Matt who sacrificed their
weekends to support me as TD so the tournament could run smoothly.
Amanda even came away with her very first ever Best Country award
just pipping Brian Shelden at the post. Maybe next year she'll be
more eager to sit in on a game rather than sit out.

The results

..1.Chris.Martin. ......... 41.27..24. 14..20.00. .85.41
..2.David.Maletsky. .......12. 07..28.81. .25.93..66. 81
..3.Brian.Shelden. ........20. 69..31.48. .10.91..63. 08
..4.Andy.Bartalone. ........1. 72..13.56. .44.44..59. 73
..5.Peter.McNamara. .......20. 37..16.67. .22.22..59. 26
..6.Alex.Amann. ......... ...6.35.. 24.07..25. 45..55.88
..7.Charles.
Treachery uses the same rules as normal Diplomacy, with the following changes:

1. With each Spring and Fall season, each player may send one “treacherous order.” This is an order for a unit of another power.

2. This treacherous order is followed in lieu of the original order the unit received (as if the commanding general has become a traitor).

3. The Game Master does NOT reveal which orders were Treacherous, nor from which player they came from.

4. In the case that any unit receives two or more different treacherous orders, these orders are not followed and the original “legal” order is used. If, however, a unit receives multiple treacherous orders but they are identical (i.e. England’s F Nth receives treacherous orders from both Russia and Turkey to move to Yor, and no other treacherous orders) then the treacherous orders are used. In this example, if a third treacherous order was submitted from France of F Nth-Hel, then no treacherous orders would be used.

Skilled players in this variant will try to take advantage of the treacherous aspect of the game, not just by planning for possible treachery against themselves, but by using the hidden aspect of the treacherous moves to explain away stabs or dot-grabs. Also, coordinating treacherous orders adds a whole new dimension to the game, as allies can cooperate to effectively commandeer a powers entire armed forces.

Diplomacy World Web Site Article of the Week Updated

I've updated the Article of the Week section again. Be sure to check it out at:

www.diplomacyworld.net

Just click on Articles, and the button on the left is for the Article of the Week. I generally update it on Thursday or Friday.

Happy stabbing!
Origins Diplomacy Tournament

Origins
Central Shuffle Tournament 3 of 6

When: June 26th-28th (Convention runs from June 25th-29th)

Where: Board Game Hall at the Columbus Convention Center

Who: Dan Mathias brings us another edition of one of the longest
running Diplomacy tournaments in North America.

How Much: Origins badges are $60 for the entire weekend. The five of us represented Chicago well, although Jeremiah didn't play a single game of Diplomacy.

The event featured 10 boards over three rounds. I'm not sure how many players participated. Maybe 30. Here are the results:
Top Board:

1) Thomas Haver of Columbus, Ohio, with a 15-center three-way as France in round 2 and a 17-center three-way as Turkey in round 3.

2) Andy Bartalone of Maryland, with a 13-center threee-way as Austria in round 1 and a 16-center three-way as England in round 2.

3, Tied) Eric Grinnell of Kentucky, with an 11-center three-way as France in round 1 and an eight-center three-way as England in round 3.

3, Tied) Corey Mason of the D.C. area, with two three-way draws, including a 10-center Russia in round 2.

5) Doug Moore of Maryland, with an 11-center three-way as Italy in round 2 and an eight-center three-way as France in round 3.

6) Thom Comstock of Chicago, with a nine-center three-way as England in round 1 and a seven-center three-way as Turkey in round 2.

7) Jim O'Kelley of Chicago, with a 16-center three-way as Italy in round 1 and a nine-center five-way as Turkey in round 3.

Best Countries:
Austria: Andy Bartalone
England: Andy Bartalone
France: Thomas Haver
Germany: Chris Barfield, with a nine-center three-way draw. Kevin O'Kelley had an eight-center three-way draw, so he missed out on a plaque by one center. Fortunately, he did not go home empty-handed. ..
Italy: Jim O'Kelley
Russia: Corey Mason
Turkey: Thomas Haver

Kevin received the I Got Hammered for the swiftest of the three swift Turkish exits in round 1. All three Turks collectively received GM David Hood's Brick award as well.

Six teams competed in Saturday's team round. Perrennial favorites Overated, featuring Doug Moore, Chris Martin and Andy Bartalone, defended their title in a landslide. Who is Ferret Redux, featuring Dave Maletsky, Graham Woodring and me, finished a distant second. And the Pink Pony Posse, featuring Greg Duenow, Thom Comstock and Kevin O'Kelly, finished third. Wahoo!

As expected, the con shook up the Grand Prix standings. By my unofficial count, Haver is now in first with 174 points, and Bartalone is in second with 173. Maletsky might have leap-frogged Woodring. Not sure. Meanwhile, KublaCon had only four boards over the five rounds, so it didn't qualify for the Grand Prix. Now it's on to the Boston Massacre next month, followed by Origins in Columbus. Bartalone will be playing in the former; Haver, the latter.

That's enough for now.
