The Boston Massacre Tournament Results

I had a lot of fun running Massacre this year. It was a fairly laid back tournament as a number of the usual travellers have rightly put their priorities in attending WDC/DipCon in Ohio next weeknd but this also created an excellent environment for the number of newer players to test their luck at tournament Diplomacy. That said the competition was still strong. Andrew Goff, one of the top Australian players was in attendance as a warm up for WDC, and Carl Ellis came tantalizingly close to winning his first tournament. In fact on Saturday evening a number of us thought he had it sown up. But the real success went to Randy Lawrence-Hurt who was completely flabbergasted when it was announced he won the tournament. Amanda won her second "best country" and Jess Dobbins played her first game ever and in one round accumulated more points than I managed playing all three rounds. While we managed to get 3 boards in round 1 and 2 we did need a few people to play two game at once. Not an easy feat given the drop dead deadlines. In the past I've given everyone a 1 minute grace period but Peter McNamara finally got his way when a clear majority of the tournament attendees voted to make the deadlines final.
This year I also took a cue from a discussion on the Chicago Dip List where someone proposed that there was a trophy that rewarded survivorship. My first attempt at a scoring system will be tweaked for next year, but overall I still like the concept. (Maybe because I accumulated 17.5 survivor points over three rounds.... hmmm....). In any case noone else was "lucky" enough to qualify for survivor points in more than one round, but the trophy was won by Jim Burgess with a total of 7 survivor points as the TD is ineligible. Congratulations Jim for despite finding himself on 2 supply centers as Austria in 1904 still managed to survive to 1909 and be in the draw (even if it was on one supply center).
