May 3rd Mini-Con in Washington State

This report from Sam Tyler:

UPCOMING MINI-TOURNAMENT

*** General Information ***

Sam Tyler is putting on a mini-tournament at his house Saturday, May 3rd. There will be 2 rounds on 2 boards. The cost is $10 per person and lunch, dinner, and snacks are provided. The schedule is as follows:

9:00AM: A 1-hr Diplomacy Class (optional)

9:15AM: Registration

10:00AM: Start Round One

5:00PM: Break/Dinner

6:00PM: Start Round Two

1:15AM: Wrap-up

*** Rules ***

There will be a fair number of newbies and so the rules will differ slightly. The scoring system will be the Owls system, detailed below. There will be 15 minutes for deadlines, but also 15 minutes for adjudication.

The Owls System (as developed by Thorin Munro, adapted from CRICKET: http://daanz. org.au/sc- cricket.htm)

35 Points for an 18+ center VICTORY

.25 of a Point for each year of survival in ELIMINATION or LOSS (max 2 points)

.5 of a Point for survivors in a LOSS

1 point per center in a DRAW

3 points for surviving a DRAW

1 point for outright leadership in a DRAW

*** Caveats ***

There will be a fair number of newbies, hence the longer adjudication period and the different system. Most newbies have experience either in online games or FtF games but have (a) either played few games, (b)
played more online games, or (c) played a long time ago. As such, there will be a class during registration that will review the rules and go over some intermediate strategy. The first will be – talk to everyone. This will be highlighted throughout the class so the expectation is that those attending the class will still have a higher
quality game.

There will be at least two children: one 12, one 10. Both have experience playing a 5-man variant but lack experience in a full game.
